SHOW FEATURES 2010
Warren Smith Ski Academy Coaching
Warren Smith and his Academy Pro Team visited the Metro Ski & Snowboard Show 2009 to show the latest cutting edge skiing instruction methods. The combo of Ski Technique, Ski Physiology and Ski Biomechanics in one package, is being labelled as the “New Wave” in ski coaching. This is now readily available after many years of development to the general public and was showcased at the show.
REVOLUTIONISE YOUR TECHNIQUE AT THE SHOW
Skiing technique and how it’s delivered to recreational skiers has been pretty much the same for the last 30 years. The “New Wave” in ski instruction and how it’s packaged for recreational skiers is the brainchild of leading British skier Warren Smith and is set to become an industry standard for anyone going on a winter holiday over the next few winters. On an Warren Smith Ski Academy pre ski assessment you can improve ski technique, ski specific fitness and greatly reduce the risk of knee and back injury. The method has the backing of skiing athletes, ski instructors, professional sportsmen from other sports such as rugby and tennis, knee surgeon’s, physios and chiropractors.
The Academy have been using this method for over 10 years and it has been a major factor in seeing their membership grow to over 2,000 skiers in the past 2 years. The critical acclaim and reviews on the Academy courses has been phenomenal to the extent that you seem to always read about their courses in every ski feature that crops up. Warren Smith say, “To me it’s just common sense for ski instruction. Pretty much all skiers have a weaker turn direction. On the mountain you’re only as good as your weaker turn whether on a 45 degrees face, a steep icy slope or on a ski instructor exam. The reason all skiers have this weaker turn is because of physiological blocks and imbalances mainly centred around the hips and legs. You can talk ski technique till your blue in the face to someone but if they have a physiological block or biomechanical issue you have no chance in changing their weaker turning direction”.
Warren has developed over the past 10 years several biomechanical and physiological checks that identify the main areas where skiers have blocks. Warren says, “It usually relates to leg steering range left and right, flex pattern looking a bit closer at the ankle flex and lateral control of the legs and trying to keep symmetrical, i.e. Not dropping into the classic skier A-Frame. All these areas can be fixed off snow in the comfort of your own home. This is what we will set out to show skiers at the forthcoming show. Academy clients already know these methods and see them as the main thing that’s allowed them to progress on and comfortably ski moguls, steeps and freeride terrain”
This method of coaching has previously only been available to elite athletes in national teams. This offering to the general public will truly give a step change to ski instruction and something that it’s been waiting on for many decades. To access the “New Wave” of ski coaching, locate the Warren Smith Ski Academy stand (529) at the ski show. Assessments last 30 minutes and need to be booked in advance.
